If you close the email in under 3 minutes, then you're prompted if you want to save the email. In Office Professional Plus 2016 with the same Windows 10 Enterprise 21H2 OS Build 19044.2604 build: if we use File Explorer's Send to-Mail Recipient right click option to send an attachment to an email, the email is not saved to Drafts unless you have it open for over 3 minutes and the AutoSave kicks in. It is saved to the Drafts immediately upon creation. The email does not have to be open for 3 minutes for the AutoSave to kick in. It is saved to the Drafts where it has to be manually deleted. If you then decide not to send the email and just close that window, it does not prompt you to save the email.
